November 2024 Foundations Report: a surprising decline in November
The number of business incorporations in Switzerland continues to show positive year-on-year trends, despite a slightly weaker November.
Between January and November of this year, 47,983 new companies were created, corresponding to an increase of 2.22%. Compared to the previous year (46,943), this represents an additional 1,040 business start-ups.
Strong Northwestern Switzerland
Northwestern Switzerland was the only region in Switzerland to record an increase in the number of company start-ups. A total of 991 new companies were registered, representing an increase of 12.87% on October. In November 2023, there were 961 entries in the commercial register, 3.12% more than last month.
In the Canton of Berne in particular, more companies were set up this month than last month and last year. With 384 new start-ups, this represents an increase of 29.73% on the previous month. Compared to the previous year, this represents an increase of 17.79%. The canton of Aargau also recorded solid growth, with 16.29% more new companies created than in October.
Deep plunge in Ticino
In Ticino, 173 companies were created in November, representing a decline of -23.45% on October. No other region recorded such a sharp drop compared to the previous month. The year-on-year drop is also striking: while there was only a slight decline of 0.48% nationwide, the number of business start-ups fell by -11.73% in Ticino.
Eastern Switzerland down
With 482 business start-ups in November, Eastern Switzerland recorded a decline of -15.29% on the previous month. Within the region, however, there were both positive and negative trends.
The cantons of Glarus and Appenzell Innerrhoden posted impressive growth: Glarus recorded 25 start-ups, an increase of 78.57%, and Appenzell Innerrhoden achieved growth of 66.67% with 15 start-ups. They are thus among the regions with the highest percentage growth in November.
The canton of St. Gallen, which is usually the region's biggest company creator, recorded just 187 business start-ups in November, corresponding to a decline of -32.49% on the previous month.
Outlook
Contrary to our expectations, business start-up activity fell slightly by -0.48% in November. In view of the fact that, in previous years, an increase has regularly been recorded in December, we are confident that the outlook for business start-ups will remain positive.
