December foundation report 2024: strong finish

Record in French-speaking Switzerland  

French-speaking Switzerland experienced a record month in December with 1,510 new companies founded, the highest regional figure for the entire year. Compared to the previous month, start-ups rose by +15.80 %, while the year-on-year comparison showed an increase of +16.42 %. The canton of Geneva stood out in particular, recording the highest contribution in the region with 460 new start-ups. There was also strong growth in Ticino: 229 new companies were founded, which corresponds to an increase of +32.37 % compared to the previous month and +16.84 % compared to the previous year.  

Strong Eastern Switzerland  

Eastern Switzerland showed particularly dynamic development in December with 653 new companies founded. This corresponds to an increase of +35.48 % compared to the previous month and +4.65 % compared to the previous year.  

In Northwestern Switzerland, 1,144 new companies were founded in December, which corresponds to an increase of +15.44 % compared to the previous month. Central Switzerland also recorded positive developments, with 688 start-ups, which corresponds to growth of +11.69 % compared to the previous month.  

Decrease in Zurich  

The Zurich region is an exception to this positive trend. Here, 771 start-ups were counted in December, which corresponds to a decrease of -4.46 % compared to the previous month. The canton also recorded a decrease of -2.77 % compared to the previous year.  

Outlook  

With almost 5,000 new start-ups in December alone, 2024 ended on a high level. The annual increase of +2.60 % indicates a continued growing interest in company start-ups, and a further increase is expected for 2025. The figures show: Switzerland remains an attractive location for new companies!
